JYMY @BIOFACH

At BIOFACH 2020 it finally happened – after tasting the JYMY “anniversary variety” pine at the International Green Week 2020, I was able to try most of the varieties of this extraordinary organic ice cream – which I had only known from the website until then – live. Of course, I didn’t miss this opportunity and made my way to the Finnish “Corner” already on the first day of the fair.

Besides SunSpelt, Matti and Tuuli Kotaja from Finnish Plant FP-Kotaja Oy were also there with their delicious Rose Blossom Jam – organic of course. Right next to JYMY was the booth of Vavesaaren Tila, who offered excellent muesli, jams and jelly candies made from Finnish berries. These are still a “rising star”, so to speak, because you can only get them in a few places in Europe so far.

But now to the delicious BIO ice cream creations from JYMY. First, I tried the JYMY TWO BERRIES – a mixture of wild blueberries and strawberries. Above all, a completely vegan ice cream pleasure – the organic milk is replaced here by an oat base. The glucose syrup used is also made from organic rice (as with all JYMY varieties) and all ingredients are from controlled organic cultivation – what more could you want? The ice cream melted on the tongue and had a very strong and fruity note.

Next on the agenda was JYMY PISTAZIA VEGAN – I have always liked pistachio ice cream and was therefore especially curious to see what the variant of JYMY would taste like. This variety is also vegan, although here – unlike the JYMY TWO BERRIES – the organic milk is not replaced with oats, but with a acrebean and pea protein base. The good 10% of roasted pistachios give this ice cream a strong pistachio aroma and an equally strong colour. A tasty ice cream, but for me personally it should also come on an organic milk basis.

Now came one of my anticipated favourites – the JYMY BLUE BERRY – what an ice cream. When it comes to berries, Finland is already way ahead – berries from Finland always taste much stronger than those growing in southern Europe or elsewhere. But the wild blueberries of Finland put there still one on it. This ice cream is not vegan – but that didn’t bother me at all – the good organic milk gives this variety a smooth lightness – plus the full blueberry aroma, a real dream!

The JYMY DOUBLE CHOCOLATE was a real “chocolate bomb” – as JYMY uses very special Cru Virunga chocolate & beans from the Eastern Congo, all ice cream varieties with chocolate are already something special. These raw materials simply taste uniquely chocolaty – so JYMY DOUBLE CHOCOLATE is a MUST for every chocolate lover. This variety is also vegan and the organic milk is based on acre beans and pea protein.

This is also the case with the vegan oat-based JYMY MINT CHOCOLATE. Whereby the fine organic peppermint oil makes the difference. It simply tastes like the noble version of “After Eight” bar, but without the penetrating finish – here the excellent chocolate is the finish!

Now it was time for something fruity again, the JYMY RASPBERRY-WHITE CHOCOLATE. With a hint of acidity and many splinters of white chocolate, this variety is a real summer ice cream. The strong fruity taste of Finnish raspberries is unique, and I personally particularly liked the fact that this ice cream is made with good organic milk.

Then came the Finnish anniversary ice cream JYMY KIEFER – but we already had that here.

What we couldn’t miss of course was the next variety – JYMY CREAME KARAMELL – an excellent, but not vegan ice cream. Here, organic milk is combined with organic cream, and in combination with the egg yolk and brown sugar, the caramel experience becomes a complete one.

So and that’s what I was allowed to try at the BIOFACH at JYMY’s – of course there are a few sorts that I still know only from the website. But that’s just the way it is with a producer who always has something going on – at this point, thank you very much for the many unique ice cream creations!

It is important to mention that JYMY always adds a little salt to all kinds of ice cream – this lifts the sweetness a little bit more. As in every good kitchen, a pinch of salt is always added to sweets and a pinch of sugar to hearty dishes – try it, it makes the difference.

You’ll find JYMY’s ice cream already in a handful of organic shops like Tjadens, ALECO, Vollcorner or the Biocompany Berlin and soon LPG and basic too – and it’s getting more and more every day – just ask around the corner in your organic shop, maybe there’s already one or the other variety in the freezer…
