CheckIt

In the CheckIt section we would like to report you about our experiences with the most diverse foods & tools for culinary purposes. Occasionally we pick out something interesting – for example, we were finally attracted by black garlic – and then we see what you can do with it in culinary terms.

This includes the different ways of using & preparing the respective products, background information on origin and availability, comparing products and even considering health aspects of it.

In the case of black garlic, we have compared varieties and product variations from different manufacturers and come up with a handful of delicious recipes for you to cook.

We started in the CheckIt section with a “test balloon” about blood oranges – one of our personal favourites. In the end, we were very surprised ourselves how many different varieties of blood oranges exist.

In the supermarkets the offer is usually limited to only one variety – a pity, because this version of the orange has so much more to offer besides the appearance.

In our article we also learned a lot about the orange itself – for example why some orange juices taste bitter and how this can be avoided. Moreover, not everything that is pretty to look at is necessarily particularly tasty – and getting to the tasty part can be a little more difficult than expected.

During our visits to FRUIT LOGISTICA we got to know many fruit and vegetable varieties that we hadn’t even seen before. It’s amazing what the many producers keep coming up with to score a coup there.

It’s great that in recent years the advantages of traditional varieties have been increasingly recognised and that such varieties are being “revived” in many places. In Belgium, for example, a project has just started with a very tasty red pear – the Red Modoc. This is a cross between the traditional trout pear and a real classic, the Williams Christ (Bartlett pear) – but from its red variety.

The whole thing will of course take a few years, as this is a traditional and down-to-earth approach. At the moment, the yield of this delicious pear is only sufficient for the domestic market – but we were able to taste it at FRUIT LOGISTICA 2020, and we haven’t been allowed to taste such a delicious pear for a long time.

We will, of course, stay on the ball here and write a contribution about this special fruit as soon as it becomes apparent that it will also be available in Germany.

Apart from that we already have – as in almost all foodadvisor sections – a quite extensive backlog of candidates for further CheckIt contributions. Here we will successively put a contribution live from time to time – as our time allows.

If you have a suggestion for a potential CheckIt topic, don’t hesitate to send us an e-mail – we are always open for recommendations.

Thank you very much in advance – and now have fun browsing!
